Euler

Euler loved the city on the Neva. Member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, he spent more than thirty years in St. Petersburg, from 1727 to 1741, and from 1766 until the end.

[1] Glinka passed away in Berlin, and was reburied (when?) in St. Petersburg.

[2] The original tombstone of Dargomyzhsky has not survived. The present one, among the most poetic in the cemetery, was set up in 1958.

[3] Glazunov passed away in Neuilly-sur-Seine. The remains and the tombstone were brought to St. Petersburg in 1972.

[4] Balakirev was born on January 2, 1837, which was in 1836 (December 21) in Julian calendar used in Russia at that time.

[5] The bas-relief (Balakirev's portrait) was renewed in 1948.

[6] You probably have noticed the curious year of birth (1834) on the monument.

[7] The year of birth is wrong (1806, not 1807) on the monument.

[8] The monument is a 1970 reproduction of the original one.

[9] The year of birth is wrong (1832, not 1812) on the monument.

[10] Euler and Lomonosov rest in St. Lazarus Cemetery, of which Tikhvin Cemetery is an extension more commonly known as Necropolis of the Masters of Arts.

[11] The remains of Euler were brought in 1955 from Smolenskoye Lutheran Cemetery, seriously damaged.
